Last weekend saw us travel around the North of England in search of some dry weather and some wind to race our DF65 and DF95. In the end we found neither required ingredient but we did find a lot of like minded individuals who made the two days racing much more enjoyable.
Saturday saw us at Fleetwood where the DF65 Nationals will be held in less than a months time, there was plenty of grey cloud which gave way to grey rain showers throughout the day, making the choice of outerwear pretty critical!
The racing was great with 16 DF65 skippers sailing the day, we managed a 5th place finish after a consistent days sailing but we didn’t have any really big scores to drop which meant that we missed out on 4th by just one point.
Saturday evening involved a dash across the Pennines (terrain features for those from Texas!) to Chateau Tushingham where the night was spent building boats for Sunday, eating Chinese food and drinking some red wine.
Sunday saw 12 DF95 skippers line up at Weecher up on’t moors above the Aire Valley and slightly below the cloud line. There wasn’t a whole heap of wind but we managed about 14 races up and down the clubhouse bank with A rigs being the order of the day. I was quite pleased with my sailing, I’m still trying to get the measure of the boat and setup is critical to a good performance when the fleet is so evenly matched.
Timtanic Too taking some lunch!
During the afternoon session the finishes were really tight with nearly all boats finishing within a boat length or two from each other. I finished 4th with three bullets to be proud of.
I need to do more sailing is the general feeling, whilst most people go club sailing to hone their skills it seems that the only sailing I get to do is at actual events that count and it usually takes me part of the day to remember how to sail which can be a little frustrating.
My next event will be an RC Laser Northern District race at Fairhaven, somewhere I haven’t sailed for a couple of years.
I’m now babysitting for a couple of days whilst Emily takes a trip to London for a concert and I have a funeral to attend in Cheshire on Friday so production will ramp up again at the weekend and beyond.
